It is the mission of the Dayton Community Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, to help alleviate hunger by distributing food regularly and on an emergency basis, and to provide clothes at no cost, each doing so regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation and in a friendly, instant, sympathetic, helpful, nonjudgmental, and confidential manner.
It all began with a hope and a vision by Dayton native, and then YCAP Food Bank Director, the late Cherie Rose Schmidt (1954-2007). Her hope was that there would be a Food Pantry in every small town in Yamhill County Pantry, for there to be better access for those in need. Cherie visited Dayton in 2002 and secured a host location at Dayton First Baptist Church. A small classroom was used as a shopping area and another small room was added for extra food storage. Now, thanks to Cherie’s vision, there are food pantries located throughout Yamhill County!
The shopper and host work together to fill the food boxes with items of the shopper's choice according to the family size.
The Food Bank is open from 4:00-6:00 PM for regular shopping on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.
The Clothes Closet is open the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 4:00-6:00 PM. The clothes are free to anyone in need.
Food Bank shoppers are welcome to visit the Clothes Closet while they wait their turn to shop for food.
Did you know that the Food Bank receives NO monies from the government?
Each year we are able to raise money in creative ways, such as the "Bottles and Cans for Bucks" program and the consignment sales of some clothing items, both of which keep our shelves stocked with food for our neighbors in need.
Our host church has been kind enough to allow us more space to expand the Food Bank and Clothes Closet over the last number of years, for which we are very grateful!
As our need for space has grown, so has the church's need for their growing congregation.
We are now planning to build a stand alone Food Bank/Clothes Closet building on property, owned by Dayton First Baptist Church, so as to provide the much needed space for each.
